Top Consumer Tips for the Atlanta Energy Audits & Home Insulation Category:

(1) Make sure the company you choose offers a home energy audit to determine what can be done to make your home more energy efficient. There are 2 types of energy audits Clip Board and Blower Door Tests. Clip Board tests, if done by an insulation expert who checks the house out by visual inspection, can usually determine a common sense approach to making your home more energy efficient. Blower Door testing is a scientific approach using invasive equipment and techniques that remove the air from your home,  to determine what needs to b done. The difference, Clip Board tests are usually free and Blower Door Tests can run from $300 to $600 range. The biggest difference is the company you choose to do the evaluation. Some homeowners will have both done.

(2) The Department of Energy is now recommending R-60 for our area. Make sure the company you choose installs the correct amount of insulation and installs attic rulers and attic certification cards that confirms installation of Brand, Material, R-Value and number of bags installed.

(3) Install attic baffles to soffit vents, flashing to recessed can lights, bathroom vents and whole house attic fans. Seal all plumbing penetrations with fire caulk.

(4) Install insulated cover to Attic Staircase to prevent dust, insects, and air infiltration.

(5) If required make sure to wrap the water heater, most insulation companies will do this for you.

(6) Cellulose Insulation: Ground up newspaper, treated with pest control chemicals and fire retardent. Great insulation at first, then the product settles around 20% a year and the fire and pest control deteriorate over time as well.  This product settles to dust, this dust gets in your home.

(7) Spray Foam Insulation: Usually installed on the ceiling of the attic. Some companies will seal the entire attic. Some foam companies are against this. Some roofing shingle manufacturers will still warranty the roof some won’t.  There are a lot of questions when it comes to these products closed cell or open cell, R-Values, R.O.I. and price. The answers vary depending on which company or manufacturer you speak with, buyer beware.

(8) Fiberglass Insulation: Batt or Blown in insulation for attics.  Preferably blow in insulation works best in the attic, while using batts on kneewalls. All fiberglass insulation is not the same, Buyer Beware. Some fiberglass insulation has chemicals, harmful dyes, binders and formaldehydes in their products.  Watch out for installation, some companies practice fluffing, adding air to the product to make it look higher than it is.  Overall Great insulation that’s been around for a long time. Look for a company that offers chemical free fiberglass and a no settle warranty.

(9) Always verify the workmen’s comp and liability insurance policy.

(10) Make sure sure the company you choose has a good reputation, solid foundation, and offers a warranty for materials and labor.
