Number One Complaint in the Moving & Storage Category:

Moving industry regulations specify that moving companies are paid by the hour and not by the job.  Be careful of  moving companies that try to beat their competition by sometimes intentionally underestimating the cost of a move on their proposal.  In many cases, you may eventually be charged more then the original lower ‘estimate’of the lower proposal by an unethical mover. Then, the more ethical mover may have lost the business with you by being honest with his proposal up front.

Top Consumer Tips for the Atlanta Moving & Storage Category:

(1)  You will likely want to start the process of your move earlier then one might think.  Many of the best movers may be booked in advance as much as 4 to 8 weeks out.  Always have a physical survey done by the mover to determine pricing.  Phone estimates are not very accurate.  Insist on having a written proposal prepared, oral estimates can be inaccurate.  Make sure you get a binding price.  This will insure there are no surprises at the end of your move.

(2)  While with the moving estimator you will want to ask as many questions as possible.  Doing so will likely avoid misunderstanding later.  Make sure you have a clear understanding of the claims process up front.  For example, let’s say you open a box 10 days after the move and you find a broken item?

(3)  Combine items you will need immediately upon arriving at your new home into one or two boxes and have them loaded last so they can unload first.  Take medications, important paperwork, valuable or cherished items, a few days worth of clothing, and other valuable items with you in your own automobile.

(4)  You may want to consider packing yourself because the cost of packing can add up quickly.  If you feel confident in packing more fragile or breakable items yourself, you can save a considerable amount of money.  But keep this in mind.  If you pack yourself, remember the moving company will not be held responsible for damage of the items you decided to pack yourself.   An exception to this is if a box shows readily identifiable damage when it was unloaded or delivered.

(5)  Again, when packing yourself, use the right size box.  Heavier items should be packed in smaller boxes and the lighter items in a larger box.  For example, do not pack books in large boxes.  Never, under any conditions, move flammable items.  Empty fuel from lawn mowers, power tools, etc.  Aerosols and combustibles cannot be moved.

(6)  When packing yourself, indicate the contents and the room it goes into on the outside of the box.  The move will go much smoother for you, especially when you start to unpack.

(7)  Do not schedule your move on the day of a home closing if possible.  Delays in closings can cost you additional money.  You can save money and sometimes receive better service if you plan your move during the middle of the month, because movers are busiest at the end of and beginning of the month.

(8)  All moving companies should carry personal liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. Avoid doing business with movers who don’t carry the appropriate insurance.  Otherwise, you may be held liable for any injuries and damages that can occur during your move.
