(1) In most cities surface water is removed by underground piping systems, and this in turn prevents localized flooding by diverting the flow of water as quickly as possible. However, this also changes the flow of natural water patterns and disrupts habitats and environments. A well-maintained drainage system can lead excess rainwater to where it should go and prevent erosion around your home at the same time.
(2) Installing a professional drainage system allows you to maintain a beautiful lawn and garden by saving your topsoil. Topsoil is the upper and outermost layer of soil, and has the highest concentration of fertile organic matter. This means its presence in your yard is crucial to the successful growth of desired plants and grasses. One rainstorm that is intensive and floods your yard can wash away large amounts of valuable topsoil. However, building a drainage system can easily save your topsoil, allowing your lawn and garden to flourish.
(3) Installing a professional drainage system will also allow you to save rainwater. Stored rainwater has many great uses and your cost savings will really add up over time. Just a few uses of stored rainwater include using it to; water your garden, wash your car, mop your floors, flush your toilets, and to fill your sprinkler system.
(4) Building a drainage system will not only prevent erosion and have a positive impact on the environment, but it will also have a positive impact on your lawn, garden and wallet.
(5) Water can be the biggest enemy to the soundness of the foundation of your home. A drainage system will help to ‘re-direct’ water away from your home so soil erosion and water intrusion are minimized.
(6) When comparing estimates, make sure each one is based on (a) same scope of work, (b) same set of specifications, (c) the same set of plans. If your contractor suggests deviations, ask that they be presented as options.
(7) Contractors should carry personal liability insurance. Avoid doing business with contractors who don’t cary the appropriate insurance. Otherwise, you may be held liable for any injuries and damages that occur during a project.
(8) Use a well known and reputable company who you can always find in the future, or be able to easily contact for any reason. You want an established company with an office that you can go to if you ever need personal contact.
(9) Require that any company representative (regardless of service category) consulting with you on your job, service or project, completely understand every detail about their product and services, product features and benefits, installation specifications, warranty information and the like.
