(1) Always hire a contractor that has all required insurance and worker’s compensation. Ask for written confirmation and verify their insurance.

(2) Never hire on price alone, this is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make. There can be a huge difference in craftsmanship and material quality. Often times “you get what you pay for”.

(3) Compare warranty information between the different contractors and get it in writing.

(4) Discuss thoroughly every detail of the project with your contractor and get it in writing to avoid misunderstandings.

(5) Ask for references from previous customers. A reputable contractor will be happy to provide them.

(6) It is extremely important to Florida homeowners that aluminum structures are built to the highest possible wind zone standards. Ask the contractor to explain what wind zone specs your job will conform to.

(7) Ask to see photo samples of work the contractor has previously performed.

(8) Hire a company you feel comfortable with. It is important that you feel the company is honest, ethical, and they can be easily reached, not only before and during, but after the job.

(9) Communicate often with your contractor often during your project. If you have changes, questions, concerns or complaints communicate them. It is better to handle issues while materials, tools and labor are readily available and it could give you the end result you desire with less cost involved.

(10) Require that any representative consulting with you on your project completely understand every nuance about their products and services, product features and benefits, installation specifications, warranty information and the like. This will be of value in identifying potential issues before any work is started.

(11) Do not help contractors or their workers and do not lend them your tools.If a worker is hurt while you are assisting (e.g., holding a ladder) or is hurt using one of your tools, you may be liable via a “tort claim” by the worker or contractor.
