How to Start Cleaning a Messy House

By Carrie Dixon, Blog Editor

Messy house that needs to be cleanedEveryone enjoys being inside of a clean and organized home. The problem is that not everyone enjoys the process that goes into having a home that is spotless and pristine. That’s why having some tips and tricks to get started cleaning, as well as some ideas about how to get things clean fast, can be helpful. If your home has gotten super messy lately, it can be stressful just to think about beginning the cleaning process. The good news is once you start, you may find it’s easier than you though. We’ll share some tips to make it as painless as possible.

Where to Start

Before you jump into the actual cleaning, it’s a good idea to turn on Spotify or iTunes for some music. This can help get you motivated to move around and get the cleaning done. Distraction like this can make a daunting process seem a little easier. If you aren’t a huge fan of music, you can try playing a podcast or audiobook instead to take your mind off of things while you work.

Removing the Garbage

Next up, you are going to get rid of all the garbage in your home. Make sure to hit up every room and remove any full garbage bags. Another tip is to have a bag with you that you can toss any extras in that should be in the garbage but haven’t made it there just yet. Having the garbage out of the house will make it seem and smell cleaner, which is an excellent place to begin.

Do the Dishes

The next thing you want to do is handle the dishes. Nobody wants to see dirty dishes lying around in the kitchen (or even worse, in the living room or bedrooms). It can be embarrassing to have company stop by when the sink is full, so take care of that early in the cleaning process. Next stop is cleaning up the rest of the kitchen.

Cleaning Surfaces

Get rid of the clutter on the surfaces around you. When the house is messy, part of that mess is nearly always attributed to random belongings that have been tossed and left on tables, chairs, and counters. For the clutter that is easy to put away, do it. If things might take a bit more time to put away, designate a box to toss it in. You can handle moving it where it should go a bit later in the process.

Squirt and Go

You likely have some kind of all-purpose cleaner in your home so grab that next. You’re going to use this to clean up all the surfaces in the house that need it. While you could take out all the different types of cleaners and use each on different areas, when you’re going for quick, all-purpose will do the job. You can use it on nearly anything and cut through the cleaning quicker than ever.

Scrubbing the Floors

You will also want to clean up the floors of your home. Depending on the material of your floors, this might mean picking up a broom, grabbing a mop, or just turning on your favorite Roomba. If the kitchen floors are grimy, you may have a bit more work on your hands, but it should go fairly quickly now that you’re this close to the finish line.

At this point, you should be good to go. You can take care of the box of clutter from earlier or just enjoy a well-deserved break. And the next time you run into a messy house, you’ve already got a plan of attack to remedy the situation.
