(1) Only hire a state certified or registered contractor. An Occupational License is not a Contractor’s License. License information can be viewed at MyFlorida.com.
(2) Ask about the workmanship warranty. The State requires one year. A strong reputable company will provide a longer warranty. Make sure you get it in writing.
(3) It is extremely important to Florida homeowners that aluminum structures are built to the highest possible wind zone standards. Ask the contractor to explain what wind zone specs your jobs will conform to.
(4) Be as specific as possible about your project. The more detailed a contract is the less possibility for errors.
(5) Hire a contractor you feel comfortable with. It is important that you feel the company is honest, ethical and reliable. It is very important the company can be easily reached before, during and after the job.
(6) Ask for testimonials from the contractor you are hiring. It is an important way of confirming your contractor’s reputation.
(7) Do some research and determine your budget, aesthetics, how large you want your enclosure and your needs. The more you know what you are looking for, the easier the project will go.
(8) Keep all documents and receipts. If anything comes up such as warranty. It will be a lifesaver.
(9) The brand of screen used makes a big difference. Make sure to ask about the quality of screen being used and expected life of the screen.
(10) Don’t hire a contractor on price alone. The lowest price is not usually the best deal. You usually get what you pay for.
(11) Get all guarantees, warranties and promises in writing.
(12) Be sure that quotes are “inclusive” of the total project costs. Some companies may provide quotes that do not include aspects that are required in order to complete the project.
(13) Do not help contractors or their workers and do not lend them your tools. If a worker is hurt while you are assisting (e.g., holding a ladder) or is hurt using one of your tools, you may be liable via a “tort claim” by the worker or contractor.
