Choosing the Right Houston Concrete Contractor

Laying concrete for a patio, a driveway, or as part of your landscaping can be a big job. For a large area or a uniquely designed concrete feature, you’ll need to start considering which concrete contractor to hire. Working with a contractor can make or break your project, so it’s important to take your time and consider this decision carefully. At the end of the day, a concrete contractor will be the person who ensures that you get exactly what you want. Other than keeping the price within your budget, here are three things that can help you narrow down your decision.

  1. Understand what a concrete contractor does. Unlike other construction jobs where the contractor may be nothing more than a supervisor, most of the time, a concrete contractor will be the main laborer on the job. Before the work begins, he’ll be responsible for working with you on the design, helping you choose the right materials for the project, and scheduling and preparing the crew. On the day of the job, he and his crew will create the foundation for the patio or walkway, and then they’ll pour, smooth, and finish the concrete. This process could go very quickly, or it could take several days or weeks if you are creating a long driveway or a very large patio. Concrete work doesn’t take as long as many other projects, so everything should be moving quickly after the decisions are final. It’s important to be sure that you are okay with the final specifications, as there won’t be much time for making changes later.
  2. Check the contractor’s references. When you are down to choosing between two or three contractors, the best way to decide is to go to their references. A professional concrete contractor will always have references to offer. When you talk to their previous clients, you can get a feel for how helpful and open the contractor is, how professional his team is, and what kind of shape they left their worksite in when they finished. You may also be able to visit one of their old installations, to see how the concrete has held up over time. This is a great way to help you picture what your home could look like in a few years.
  3. Read the contracts and warranties carefully. A recent study by NYU concluded that up to 95 percent of people do not read the fine print on contracts before they sign. When you are working with a contractor that is a dangerous mistake to make. You want to be sure that the concrete is covered by a good warranty in the case of cracking or misshapen settling. You also want to be sure that the contractor is held liable for any injuries or damaged property that may occur during the job. If a contractor’s legal paperwork is vague or leaves you with too many questions, you may want to consider going with someone else.
